If you are an upcoming artist in Uganda, you know that getting your music as much exposure as possible is the name of the game.
The question is, with all the options available to you, which ones give you the best exposure? Which radio stations, TV stations, shows or presenters give you the best chance of moving from being an up-and-coming artist to starring in your own billboard?
The Sawasawa Team has some thoughts on this. Here we share with you some tips on how to get your music onto main stream media and which radio and television stations, shows and which producers, deejays and presenters you need to get in touch with.
But before we begin, a bit of prep. You should know that radio and television stations won’t play just any song. They have particular criteria they look at before airing your music, including:
Your song must be mixed and mastered to professional quality. For radio stations the audio quality must be crystal clear and easy to listen to, no echoes or weird noises in the background. Use experienced producers to enable you achieve this. For television, if your 2018 video looks like it was made in 2005, then it won’t be played. Capture your videos using proper (not necessarily expensive) equipment to bring out a picture quality appealing to the eye and fit for TV.
Your music must not incite violence.
Any violence of any nature, be it domestic, tribal, political that your lyrics or video portrays WILL deny you a spot on the play list of radio and television stations and probably earn you a spot in court or jail instead. Ensure your videos or lyrics do not incite any form of violence at all not even the least.
Your music must be free of Profanity
This refers to blasphemous or obscene language. Remember this is not America so vulgar language, curse words, nude scenes or vixens in any of your song lyrics or videos will not interest any mainstream media house in playing your music, but Father Lokodo and the Anti-pornography committee will be super interested. Keep your music profanity free and skip that hassle.
